  • Klosterneuburg near Vienna, Austria / Home Office possible
  • € 53,000* gross/year - position limited until 31.10.2026 (care leave replacement)

Your Responsibilities

As Bioinformatician you will act as a bridge between research questions and reliable computational solutions within our Scientific Computing team. You help researchers by building reproducible workflows, advising on best practices, and contributing to a shared ecosystem of tools and standards (HPC, containers, workflow engines, code review, and data management).

  • Partner with researchers to translate biological questions into well-scoped computational analyses and deliver actionable results
  • Develop, maintain, and continuously improve bioinformatics workflows across domains such as genomics, transcriptomics, single-cell, metagenomics, and proteomics obtained from a broad variety of model organisms
  • Productionize analyses using workflow systems (e.g., Snakemake / Nextflow), with strong practices around version control, testing, documentation, reproducibility, and traceability
  • Scale workflows on HPC/cluster environments (Linux, Slurm) and optimize runtime, memory consumption, and storage efficiency
  • Strengthen reproducibility through containers (Docker/Singularity/Apptainer), environment management (e.g., conda/mamba), and clear provenance/metadata practices
  • Build robust, well-documented software tools—primarily in Python and R
  • Translate complex experimental datasets into clear, interpretable visualizations and reports for diverse audiences
  • Work closely with experimental scientists to support data analysis, interpretation, and decision-making throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Identify methodological, technical, or workflow shortcomings in analyses and pipelines; propose and implement improvements in strategy, automation, tooling, and reporting
  • Support and train users and contribute to a culture of shared best practices

Your Profile

  • University degree in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, or a related field (MSc or PhD)
  • Hands-on experience analyzing biological datasets (NGS or other high-throughput data) and familiarity with common bioinformatic tools
  • Ability to build customized data-processing workflows from raw data to final visualization/reporting
  • Strong skills in Python and/or R and comfort writing maintainable code
  • Solid working knowledge of Linux and HPC experience (e.g. Slurm)
  • Excellent communication skills and a collaborative mindset: you enjoy partnering with others and sharing knowledge
