The study of moduli spaces of vector bundles on algebraic curves has advanced considerably since its beginnings in the 1960s with links to many different areas of mathematics and theoretical physics. One relatively recent tool is the introduction of the theory of Higgs bundles. There are modifications to this theory involving spinors and this reveals some intriguing new issues, which link with both classical geometry and modern problems.
