IST Austria invites public to the Open Campus 2017
Science festival for the entire family on May 21 – Discover research in a playful way and free of charge
On Sunday, May 21, the Institute of Science and Technology Austria (IST Austria) will once again open its doors to adults and children who are eager for knowledge. The Open Campus between 12 noon and 6 pm will present a variety of research topics. Visitors will be able to explore the science exhibition, laboratory tours and a diverse children’s program. The event will take place in any weather. Registration is not required.
As in the previous years, the popular family lecture will be a highlight. Computer scientist Bernd Bickel will explain how the institute’s 3D printer works and how he develops methods to manufacture new unique devices using this technology. In the science exhibition, children and adults can solve mathematical puzzles in a playful way and find out which unresolved questions the mathematicians are tackling in their everyday work. Unresolved issues concerning the brain also form a topic of the exhibition: Where exactly is the spatial orientation located in the brain? How does the complex network of nerve cells develop? Learn more about these and similar questions at the Open Campus.
In addition, numerous lab tours will take visitors across the institute and let them delve into different research areas. The newly opened “Nanofabrication Facility”, in which tiny microprocessors are manufactured under dust-free conditions, presented for the first time. But visitors can also find out more about fruit flies or brain cells on guided tours. The “Open Museum” initiative of the Museum Gugging will also offer family tours during the Open Campus.
Children will get the opportunity to attend a fire fighting training organized by the Maria Gugging fire brigade, the experimental workshop of the Kindergarten Froschkönig, the “Kinderforschungswelt” of the children’s office of the University of Vienna and much more. Situated less than twelve kilometers from Vienna, IST Austria will be the ideal destination for a family outing at the Open Campus.
A free shuttle bus service between Tulln and Vienna will be available every hour starting from 11:30 am. The detailed program can be found at: www.open-campus.at
