Established in 1955, this Austrian state decoration honors outstanding scientific and artistic achievements on the proposal of the Federal Government, after application by the Federal Minister of Education, Science and Research. Minister Martin Polaschek, who nominated President Henzinger, recognized Henzinger’s tireless efforts to develop Austria as an international center for research. For Governor of Lower Austria Johanna Mikl-Leitner, the development of ISTA is a success story for Lower Austria and the culture of science and innovation that has blossomed there.

Henzinger, the first president of the Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA), credits the institute’s success to an uncompromised commitment to excellence and to the complete freedom of the scientists.

At the end of this year, Henzinger will step down as president of ISTA and hand over his duties to his successor, the molecular biologist Martin Hetzer. He is already looking forward to dedicating himself completely to research, “in my dream job as professor at ISTA.”
