(Cryo)-Focus Ion Beam Specialist for Life Science Applications

Your Responsibilities

The ISTA Electron Microscopy facility supports the vibrant international scientific community at the institute, with state-of-the-art cryo-EM infrastructure, covering single-particle analysis, ion-beam milling and cryo-electron tomography workflows (ET). To strengthen our team, we are looking for a highly motivated person who will support EM facility users in the Life Science Focused Ion Beam (FIB) applications with the primary focus on the Cryo-FIB and cryo-Correlated Light and Electron Microscopy (CLEM) applications.

  • Operate and maintain the FIB system at Cryo and Room Temperature and the Cryo-CLEM system, including troubleshooting technical issues
  • Monitoring of the equipment and schedule regular system checks, including systems alignment to guarantee high-quality performance
  • Sample preparation of biological samples for Cryo-FIB milling and Cryo-Lamella quality evaluation by means of Cryo-TEM
  • Conduct training, assistance, on-site support and supervision of researches
  • Monitoring of compliance with rules to ensure all safety protocols and standard operating procedures are followed
  • Active contribution to the methodology development and implementation of the latest trends from the field of Cryo-FIB and room temperature FIB

Your Profile

  • Advanced degree (M.S./Ph.D.) in Biological Sciences, Biochemistry, Structural Biology or Physics
  • Proven hands-on Cryo-FIB experience and experience in cryo-electron tomography workflows including cryo-CLEM
  • Practical experience in diverse biological sample preparation for cryo-FIB, including plunge-freezing and high-pressure freezing methods
  • Computational skills related to cryo-electron tomography data collection and processing SW
  • Experience in lift-out FIB milling is an advantage
  • Practical programming experience (Python, Matlab) is an advantage
  • High degree of reliability and organizational skills
  • Service oriented approach towards researches in a multidisciplinary environment
  • Excellent communication, presentation and writing skills in English
