Scientific Computing
This scientific service unit supports scientists with their scientific computing needs and offers consulting on hardware and software solutions for larger projects.
Its staff operates a High-Performance Computing (HPC) Cluster and provides procurement and licensing services for scientific software and hardware.
They are also in contact with the VSC, the cluster for academic and research institutes in Austria, for which they can provide access to resources and support.
For general IT questions (purchase of standard equipment, end user support, file systems, accounts and access,…) please visit the ISTA IT Homepage at: it.ist.ac.at

Services
Services offered by the facility:
- High-Performance Computing Cluster at ISTA
- Procurement, licensing and support for scientific software
- Software engineering specifically for HPC applications (MPI, MP, CUDA, machine learning,…)
- Support for custom hardware or non-standard system configurations (i.e. for CryoEM, CryoVMs, etc.)
- Software development for research groups
- Bioinformatics
Equipment
HPC Cluster
- 140 compute nodes and 20 GPU nodes (with at least 4 GPUs) running Debian Linux
- each node at least 64GB of RAM, 16CPU cores, InfiniBand, NFS storage through IPoIB/RDMA
- 80 nodes are connected via EDR 100Gps InfiniBand, 128GB RAM
- 12 nodes with >256GB RAM, largest node at the moment 6TB RAM
- Job scheduling system: SLURM
- Software/Support/Optimizations for different fields of interest: Cryo EM, Fluid Dynamics, Evolutionary Biology, Bioinformatics (Genome Sequencing), Machine Learning, Image Processing, Cryptography, Mathematics, Algorithms, Applied Physics, Quantum Physics
Cluster Storage
High-performance distributed cluster storage with a current total capacity of 2.5 PB. Capacity regularly gets expanded based on scientists’ demands.
Bioinformatics Services
The principal purpose of the Bioinformatics Services is to facilitate the handling and analysis of (biological) data for our researchers at ISTA. To achieve this ambition we place emphasis on the following activities:
- provide the opportunity for consultation on bioinformatics and data analysis questions
- cooperate with research groups to perform data analysis
- develop and share custom made data analysis work flows tailor-made for individual research questions and adapted to IST’s HPC infrastructure
- engage in teaching bioinformatics courses for students and scientists
Since bioinformatics comprise a broad field, covering a wide range of different scientific methods and topics, we can unfortunately not ensure expertise on-site for all instances. Currently we focus on topics circling around transcriptomics/genomics, particularly on different applications of next generation sequencing. To be expedient beyond that, above list shall be extended by our ultimate objective:
- serve as a communication hub within IST and beyond for all questions related to biological data analysis, thereby acting as an intermediary, fostering new connections within the IST research network.
